September 15th 2006 – At Economist Conferences First Business Roundtable with the Government of Albania on September 14th 2006, Prime Minister Sali Berisha underlined his government’s commitment to make Albania an attractive country for foreign investment by reforming the public administration, reducing taxes and fighting corruption. Mr Berisha said “We can make Albania the safest and most attractive country for your investment,” during the panel discussion with business leaders.
Other issues addressed were:
· What are the top government priorities and challenges? · Is the Clean Hands campaign showing results: prospects for fighting organised crime and corruption · Is Albania now politically ready for the EU? · What will the Stability and Association Agreement with the EU mean for Albania
The panel included:
Steven Grunerud, Chief Executive Officer, Raiffeisen Bank Albania Silviu Hotaran, General Manager, Microsoft South-eastern Europe Edmond Leka, Chief Executive Officer, Financial Union Tirana
Mr Berisha answered questions from delegates about the government’s tax plans, improving power supplies, plans for infrastructure development and Albania’s relationship with the EU. Many delegates said that the Albanian government should work to improve the country’s image abroad, which in some respects doesn’t reflect the business opportunities on offer.
Albania has so far failed to attract large amounts of foreign direct investment during the transition period. Richard Eames, Senior Economist, Economist Intelligence Unit said that “Albania could potentially attract more foreign investment in the future by privatising state assets in sectors such as telecoms and electricity, and by improving the overall business environment”. Nenad Pacek, Director, EMEA and Global Practice Leader, Government Roundtables, Economist Intelligence Unit commented that; “The excellent turnout shows a growing interest in Albania among foreign companies.”
